Went for a walk with the dogs in our local wood which, delightfully, is called ‘Nutwood’ [link]. It had just finished raining and the pungent aroma from the wild garlic (Allium ursinum) was amazing.[link]
The wild garlic grows in woodland, in near or among the bluebells, and is a wonderful sign of spring.

Install the GNU build system:

There is a hiccup with autotoolset [link]
as it does not exist in any of the repositories and can only be downloaded as an rpm package.

...autotoolset-0.11.4-1.i386.rpm?modtime=1055116800&big_mirror=0
It must, therefore, be converted to a debian package with alien.
Install alien:
sudo apt-get install alien [link]
Convert rpm:
sudo alien autotoolset-0.11.4-1.i386.rpm
Depackage and install resulting deb package
sudo dpkg -i autotoolset_0.11.4-2_i386.deb [link]
I had a problem running the wonderfully useful acmkdir script getting the error
/usr/bin/acmkdir: 24: function: not found
Go figure?
and had to call the shell directly:
$SHELL acmkdir helloworld

Remember that makefiles require the ascii |TAB| character (Hex 09) as a leader for command lines!

Why the tab in column 1? Yacc was new, Lex was brand new. I hadn’t tried either, so I figured this would be a good excuse to learn. After getting myself snarled up with my first stab at Lex, I just did something simple with the pattern newline-tab. It worked, it stayed . And then a few weeks later I had a user population of about a dozen, most of them friends, and I didn’t want to screw up my embedded base. The rest, sadly, is history.

We have had some high winds around here recently. I like to take a walk with the dogs after the storms have died down but our way was blocked by this large tree trunk/branch that was blown over by the violent winds:

Leopard finally gets its second patch, and boy does it fix a lot of stuff. The first patch hit back in November, with test builds of the second making it out a month later. Here’s a list of the major things the 10.5.2 patch fixes (including menubar transparency and Stacks).
